I've owned this rifle for almost 7 years now and have only had BAD experiences with it. After I shoot about 50 rounds out of it, it seems a part always falls off. I've sent it to the manufacture twice, a gun smith three times, and still the rifle has issues. The issues are always associated with the bolt and bolt handle. After learning it has been discontinued and the parts are not even produced anymore, I believe its time for Remington to refund all the individuals that purchased one. Very dissatisfied customer!..

5 of 5 Stars!
I own two of these, both this model. It is a good all-around autoloader, and very accurate out of the box. There are a few issues that some owners have, mostly feeding or extraction issues. Fail to load and fail to extract issues on the 597 are caused for a few reasons: Some 597s come from the factory with a preservative in the barrel/bore. Cleaning with a brush and bore cleaner may be in order. Neither of mine required this. There are three generations of magazines for the 597. Generation 1 is plastic, generation 2 is metal, and generation 3 is metal with a small circled "10" on the side. The latter mag is the best, and Remington will swap the older mags for the latest for free. Another issue is the guide rail set screws have been overtightened either at the factory or by the owner. Remove the receiver from the stock and you will see two small hex screws on the rear of the receiver. These screws are only to keep the guide rods in place and do not need to be tight. Take a 5/32 Allen wrench and make sure these are loose, loosen them until they are not protruding from the receiver. The stock will prevent them from backing off. Like the 10/22, the Remington 597 is particular of what ammo is fired through it. Some experimentation may have to be done to find its favorite ammo. Most owners have good luck with Federal Auto-Match bulk pack. Some owners upgrade the stock extractor with one made by Volquartsen. Volquartsen also makes a target hammer that lowers the trigger pull, which is heavy on some 597s...

4 of 5 Stars!
I have had this rifle for about 90 days shot it most of them. 4 stars for weapon 1 star for magazine. The trigger group housing is plastic and no easy sling mount. I had to drill my own. Uncle bucks kit # 1001-2 is ideal for sling mounts. VERY ACCURATE! 1/2 MOA groups @ 50m with standard velocity ammo. groups smaller then a dime with CB ammo @ 25m! decent quality, fair price. Pain to clean to MARINE STANDARDS. does fire well reliably a little slow cycling during tactical shooting but i have not tried high velocity rounds this should speed it up nicely. Gun will jam if you load more then 5 or 6 rounds in mag. MAGS FAULT not the gun. the cheap plastic follower cantors to one side or the other and sometimes the follower sticks on a front back tilt. make sure to tap the back side of your magazine. went to zero the rifle and found it to be DEAD ON OUT OF THE BOX! I will try mounting a scope this weekend and see how that goes. When I bought this semi auto 22 i wanted a gun that my wife could use as a short range varmint rifle complete setup under 300$ and brand name had no bearing. I looked and tested researched remmy won out. For accuracy AND reliability then added sling and soon scope this rifle is solid 100m tac driver! would prefer all steel components and a steeper curve on the pistol grip. (I like more vertical style grips) over a you shouldnt be disapointed once you've shot it (properly)..

2 of 5 Stars!
This rifle is decent for target practice and varmin; beware, this baby jams alot. Since the 22LR cartrigde is small, I like it better in the bolt action rifle. Overall, it's not bad for the price. Don't expect much in performance though. Jams way too much for my taste...

Its a pretty solid rifle. The rifle is easy to fire, clean, and sight in. Also its pretty light and the recoil is barley noticable...
