4 of 5 Stars!
When I entered into the law enforcement profession the revolver was still a common sight in the holsters of police officers in the South. For those departments that authorized on 38 Special loads the 125 grain semi-jacketed hollow point was pretty much the standard. This offering from Remington features their traditional scalloped bullet design that lends itself to fairly good expansion. Accuracy with this load is good, and groups with a SP101 hover around the 3 inch mark at 15 yards off hand. From a 4 inch service revolver a steady hand and produce slightly tighter groups at the same range. Remington's scalloped bullet design also has a defined taper as opposed to some other manufacturers. This is a definite plus if you are using speedloaders as they make reloading much easier in my experience. Muzzle flash in low light shooting is not excessive, thus its impact on the shooter is minimal. Recoil from this round when fired from an SP101 was entirely controllable, and in service sized revolvers such as a Model 64 Smith and Wesson it is quite pleasant. Overall, this is what I consider to be the traditional police service revolver round in the 38 Special caliber due to its acceptance. As always, the choice of what to load your defensive revolver with is your own decision to make. This particular load has a long history in the law enforcement community, and is both accurate and easy to control. Though not one of the more modern bullet designs, it has endured because its track record is fairly well established. It is definitely a loading that is worth your time to test and formulate your own opinion...
