I have shot 410 shotguns before and generally they have almost no recoil, but due to the Rossi Youth Shotgun's light weight and minimal recoil pad, this shotgun kicks fairly hard. It isn't 12 gauge 00 Buck hard, but you can definately feel it. Not a big deal for me, but can still be intimidating for the kids, even with an aftermarket recoil pad.
The Rossi seems as cheaply made as possible and barrel gets hot after a few shots (no heat shield here), but it has worked reliably. It has a safety, which might be overkill for a single shot shotgun, but that is something the H&R single shot lacks. The trigger isn't bad and it seems fairly accurate. That recoil, though--my kid went back to his .22 rifle, the Rossi's kick was enough to dissuade him from shotguns for the moment...
