I bought mine 2 years ago. I' m not an African hunter, just read too much Elmer Kieth and Jack O'Conner as a kid. Always dreamed of Africa, and an African rifle is about as close as I'm going to get.
It's hard to understand this rifle without handling it. It's light and fast and goes to where you look. Comfortable. I like it. Feels like part of me, unlike the heavier and muzzle heavy .375 H&H RSM. Add the cartridge is fully adequate for anything, unless you're needing a stopping rifle. (Not to pan the RSM - in .458 Lott, it's not light but it does balance and point rapidly. Too much barrel metal in the .375 H&H).
The action is smooth enough, but more importantly, it inspires confidence - works, slow or fast, positive and reliable. No failures to feed so far, but not a statistically significant number of rounds yet. It feels right. Extraction is crisp and the empties clear the area, again inspiring confidence.
The big white front bead with the bold vertical white bar on the rear sight is a more clearly visible sight than any other I've seen. It's hard to adjust for windage, a tedious process of trial and error. Mine was good from the factory, don't move yours unless its needed. I'd pay more for real micrometer adjustment.
The real lesson to me was the effectiveness of the express sight! Always a pistol shooter, I didn't at first quite know what to do with it. But after ringing the 18 inch gong with it at 200 yards offhand 2 out of three, I say its a good sight. It's in your field of view always, not covering your view at all. Different in this respect from the NECG peep I put on it; shoots very well with the express sight, with no sacrifice of awareness of the forward environment. I orederd my Freedom Arms 97 with an express sight because of the utility of this sight on the Ruger.
Finally, when it hit the gong, it did knock the dust off it, and let freedom ring! One rifle for this or any other continent? This one will do it!.. |
