Toward the end of my career as police officer the Speer Gold Dot line of ammunition became the choice of most departments in my region of the South. What seperates the Gold Dot line from conventional loadings is the use of their bonded bullets. With this you will not see the fragmentation and jacket seperation that is common with ordinary semi-jacketed or jacketed hollow points. What this achieves is a more uniform expansion and typically deeper penetration than traditional loads, particularly after passing through barriers. This is appealing to police departments because often officers are forced to shoot defensively through barries ( ie: glass, auto-body sheet metal, etc ) which can drastically decrease retained bullet weight and performance. The Gold Dot bullets bonding helps to mitigate these affects and thus increases performance at the "terminal" level. Many state police and local police departments utilize this line of ammunition for this very reason. My own experience with the 125 grain Gold Dot has showed that it performs exceptionally well. Accuracy out of 4 inch revolvers I use is typically 2 1/2 inches from 20 yards. Snub-Nose revolvers I have used to send this ordinance down range typically open up to 3 to 3 1/2 inches at the same distance which is acceptable. I have fired this load into a variety of materials and found that it performed as advertised, meaning that its retained weight was near 100 percent. I know of fellow officers that have and to humanely dispatch wildlife struck by vehicles with this load, and each have stated that its performance was first rate. Not long after their release one of my former departments authorized them for use in our back-up 38's. To see how they performed I fired them into some old Threat Level III body armor panels to capture them. As was to be expected, the panels did their job well and the recovered slugs showed good expansion and total weight retention. I have also recovered slugs fired into sheet metal, metal drums, and wooden posts. Each slug retained their bonded jackets and showed expansion to varying degrees. All in all they are excellent performers in my opinion. As always, the choice of what you load in your defensive firearm is yours to make alone. With numerous police agencies issuing this line of ammunition to their officers in the field it is definitely worth your consideration.
