In 1977 I bought a Ruger Blackhawk single six in .357 mag. with the 4 5/8" barrel. Over the first few years I put a lot of different loads and brands through it. After seeing the accuracy and consistancy of the Winchester Silvertips, I never put anything else in the cylinder. I actually took a woodchuck at 100 yards with a branch as a rest for my base hand. This ammo is getting hard to find anymore so don't hesitate when it's available...

The Winchester 145 grain Silvertip is what I consider to be a multi-purpose loading. The 125 grain JHP\'s that are excellent for defensive use have sometimes taken grief for moderate penetration. While the 158 grain JHP\'s have taken grief for over penetrating sometimes and viewed as best reserved for hunting. The 145 grain Silvertip is to me the middle of the road sort of round. It offers a little more penetration than the lighter 110 to 125 grain loadings and respectable expansion. Several police departments in the past issued this round to their officers when revolvers rode in Sam Brown duty belts. I carried a 4 inch Smith and Wesson .357 as a \"car gun\" when I worked rural law enforcement as a deputy sheriff. I loaded this round into the old Smith\'s cylinder for two reasons. The first was that if I used it in the line of duty I might have to shoot through my windows toward a threat. The heavier bullet design of the Silvertip simply worked better for this purpose, and it has had a history of good performance over the years. The second reason was that as deputy sheriff\'s we were often required to humanely dispatch animals struck by vehicles. On deer sized game these rounds perform well as long as the shooter does his or her part. As far as accuracy is concerned I have found them to be slightly more accurate than lighter .357 loadings. Groups at 25 yards from my 4 inch 357\'s hover around the 3 1/2 inch mark or less with my aging eyes. Muzzle flash in low light is less than the commonly produced 125 grain loadings in my experience. As always the choice of what to load is yours to make. However, if the road you travel takes you down those scenic country roads in which both man and beast travel, this round is definitely one I would take a close look at...
