Supreme Elite

12 Gauge, 3 in, 300 GR Lead Free, 2000 fps, 5 Rd/bx

Hot on the heels of its highly successful launch of the Winchester® Supreme Elite® XP³™ 2-3/4-inch Slug in 2007, the renowned ammunition maker is following it up with a new 3-inch variation for even more knockdown power at near-centerfire rifle distances. The Supreme Elite XP³ 3-inch Slug features a patented, one-piece, 300-grain sabot designed to deliver high energy and deep penetration on big game. Winchester developed the highly accurate lead-free-alloy projectile to extend consistent, ethical and lethal big game hunting ranges beyond 175 yards in 12-gauge rifled barrel slug guns.

The new Supreme Elite XP³ 3-inch Slug features:
One-piece, lead-free alloy, 300-grain, tipped sabot
Plastic tip for improved down-range ballistics

I tried this loading along with 8 other Sabots this last weekend to determine which shoots the best out of my gun. I tried sabots from Remington, Federal, Winchester and Hornady with muzzle velocities from 1450 to these SXP123's at 2100. My gun is a Benelli Nova pump with a Benelli 24" barrel with a twist rate of 1:24. On the cantilever I have a Bushnell HoloSight XLP. I was shooting from a table using a Boyt rest. My first test was to shoot 3rnd groups at 40' to eliminate as much shooter and environmental errors as possible in determining group size. The environmental conditions were 60-65 degrees, very light, swirly, winds, 3900 foot elevation, 40% humidity. I couldn't group these SXP123's at 40' because the sabots were still traveling with the bullet and were destroying my target paper. At 40' the steel disk in the bottom of the sabot would cut a ~5/8" hole through my 3/8" plywood backer/target board. Backing off to a target distance of 50 yards, unfortunately, these SXP123's didn't group well at all, my 6 round group was ~6" across. Shots 1 and 3 made one jagged hole and shots 4 and 5 made one jagged hole but these two pairs were ~4" from each other. Shots 2 and 6 were 2" to 4" from the other shots, all encompassing the bulls-eye. I found all the sabots which ranged from about 25 yards to just a couple yards shy of the target, most about 5 to 10 feet right of the bullet path. Unfortunately, I was only able to test these SXP123s and the Winchester SSDB123s, Dual Bonds, at 50 yards due to running out of day light and bad shoulder bruising. At 40' the SSDB123 were the best with one hole barely bigger than the bullets. At 50 yards, a 3-shot group of the SSDB123s gave a grouping of 1". At 40' the other top performers were the Hornady SST's and the Remington AccuTip, each with _1" groups but I haven't tested them at further distance, yet. The worst performers I had, at 40', were the Remington Premier Core-Lokt Ultra's with a group just over 2". One last thought; The SXP123's kicked like a mule, definitely giving the most felt recoil and largest muzzle flash of all 9 munitions...

Shot this ammo using a savage 210 with great results, 1 in groups @100 yds and 2 1/5 @ 200 yds. Don't know how it performs on deer yet...
