I have had the Cougar 8040 for 7 yrs now (mine is actually a Beretta) and it's a seriously reliable gun. Been thinking of getting the new 45ACP cougar by Stoeger. The gun has never jammed or had any problems with lots of different ammo, of course I clean my handguns after shooting everytime. The only complaint I can think of is the long single action trigger pull. It takes getting used to. You have to remember not to let the trigger out so far after each shot which is hard to do sometimes. But, the quality and reliability of the gun is fantastic! I carried it for years but have switched to a smaller lighter handgun now. It is a bit of a tank by todays standards. It is now my bedside home defense gun. I trust it with my life. I paid about $500 for mine in '03 (slightly used but mint condition) so if the price is now arond $400 it's a steal!! In fact my local gun shop sells it for $369 for the 9mm and 40 S&W. I think the 45ACP is a bit higher priced. You won't go wrong buying this in any caliber, it is a way better pistol than most out there but overlooked for sure. I looked at the new Beretta Storms but it's basially just the new version of the Cougar. Almost the same pistol but $150 more. Get the Cougar!!..

I cannot say enough positive things. My first handgun purchase was a Beretta 92FS about 20 years ago. I just recently got back into shooting after about 10+ years. I still have my Beretta, which still performs flawlessly after all these years. Never once have I encountered any issues (FTE, FTF, etc.). My brother has numerous handguns, one of which is the PX4 Storm in .45 ACP. I really liked it after firing it, but was more attracted to the .40 S&W, which he also has in a Glock and the Baby Eagle. I was leaning toward purchasing the Baby Eagle until I found the Stoeger Cougar on the internet I went from the shop directly to the gun range and fired about 200 rounds of the 165 grain WWB ammo thru and it performed flawlessly. I can\'t imagine any other gun for $500 or less matching this one in terms of return on investment. Buy one - you will not regret it. The only drawback appears to be the lack of accessories, however, it is noted that anything that fits the original Beretta Cougar will work, so it may just take a little searching...

As said this is a diamond in the rough. It is made by Stoeger a subsidiary of Beretta. This pistol was originally designed and produced be Beretta in the '90s and sold for $700 - $800. It was designed to enter the compact pistol self defense market. It didn't sell well due to price alone. The pistol has nice weight my .40 S&W tips the scales at approximately 36 oz. fully loaded, contrary to popular opinion a semi-automatic with a little weight will provide quicker follow up shots while absorbing more of the recoil than a similarly chambered polymer pistol. I owned a Sigma series .40 S&W the key word is "OWNED". A complete night a day difference when firing these two pistols side by side. I won't say all polymer pistols are bad but there is a huge margin that there light weight construction normally won't come close to the performance of this pistol. This is an excellent buy for someone interested in an inexpensive but not cheap personal protection pistol. This is my "PRIMARY" carry weapon. It has a rotating barrel which also negates a lot of muzzle flip inherent in a locked breech design. It has the identical manual of arms operation as the famous Beretta 92FS...
