CZ-USA 550 American CZ USA American 6.5MMX55MM Swede w/Blue Barrel & Walnut Stock The CZ 550 American has all the features of the CZ 550 Lux but in an American styled package. This rifle was made with the American shooter in mind. The American features a newly designed classic American pattern stock, with satin finish and a Pachmayer recoil pad. Referring to the new, replacement rifle mentioned in a previous review, some preliminary shooting
results look promising. Using Lapua 6.5x55 brass, Berger 130 gr. VLD hunting bullets, Reloader 22 powder
and CCI BR2 primers, the first and only 5 shot group at 100 yds fired thus far yielded a nice, round 0.9
inch group with 4 bullets landing in 0.65 inches. I thought the CZ 550 might have a problem with the
Berger 130\'s since Berger recommends a 1 in 8 in. twist for those bullets, but the 1 in 9\" twist in the
CZ 550 looks to be doing just fine. I\'m curious to see how 140 grain bullets will do, so will be trying
those next... |

The rifle with the rough chamber throat mentioned in a previous review was sent to the warranty center in Kansas City. Yesterday I received a package that proved to be a completely new rifle from CZ. The new
rifle looks to be a much better example. The chamber throat is much smoother than the one on
the original rifle. The trigger is much improved as
well. In addition, the stock on the new rifle is a
nicely figured piece of wood with contrasting stripes.
The wood and bluing is very attractive and impressive for the price. The factory test target shipped with the rifle shows a nice 1/2 in. , 3 shot group at 50 meters, leaving me pretty optimistic about the rifle's accuracy. In all, I guess you could imagine a less than optimum rifle might slip
out once in a great while. But what counts is what
how a manufacturer responds when a problem is
brought to their attention. CZ is to be commended for their response in this case... |

Received this rifle two days ago, so haven't
shot it yet. But I will be sending it in for warranty
service before any attempt to actually fire it.
The barrel has an extremely rough looking throat
at the beginning of the rifling. A borescope shows a throat that looks as if it was done with a wood rasp.
The trigger in the "set" mode is very good but it
needs major adjustment to be usable in the conventional manner. Also, the action is not smooth, with roughness and binding at the rear of the bolt travel. The external appearance is good with nicely finished & figured wood, checkering is good with an attractive pattern, and bluing is well done.
I was eagerly awaiting the rifle as it was in the
caliber I wanted and the single set trigger seemed
like an added attraction. But with the aforementioned defects, I'm somewhat disappointed. Time will tell if the defects can be
corrected sufficiently... |
