I own one of these. It is the most fun rifle I have ever owned. The price is fantastic compared to other 45/70s. This rifle does not eject the empty brass....it extracts it. Many people do not understand that H&R went with two different systems now. On rifles like these that shoot an expensive round they merely easily extract the brass so it can be recovered and put in your pocket without having to get down on your hands and knees and crawl around and under logs and rocks to get your empties.(THERE are some nasty things living under logs and rocks .)
I have kept it stock, but later want to add a Creedmore type site. I mostly shoot it and its shorter brother the short barreled Handi Rifle in 45/70 around 150 yds. I can hit anything I aim at at that range. I practice on paper dinner platters for targets spray painted with red florescent paint. If you are lucky you might see one of these on a shelf. They are usually hard to come by so it would be wise to scoop it up while they are still around. By the way, I have a LEE Classical hand loader and loading these rounds by hand saves a bundle and is really the way to go in these calibers. I keep around 300 rds. on hand all the time. I usually load the 325 gr. jhp,405 gr. soft nose lead and the 500 gr. DGX or INTERLOCKED Hornandy Dangerous Game Expanding rd. It can take an engine out of a semi 3 football fields away... |

You can't beat this gun for the price. The gun is light enough to shoot without a rest, but heavy enough to be held for a steady shot. It is dependable and accurate. I use a red-dot scope and only shoot out to 150 yards. The only problem is that the shell does not eject very well, but it does slide out very easily. I have shot the more expensive brands of 45-70s, and the only difference I can tell in shooting is the kick. This gun will kick more, but that is because it is lighter. A slip-on recoil pad will greatly reduce the felt recoil. Compared to the Handi-Rifle, this rifle kicks less and shoots straighter. I have already recommended this gun to many of my friends... |
